We have an exciting opportunity for volunteers. The Friends of Arlington's Planetarium (FOAP) recently acquired a Portable Planetarium Dome. We have taken the Portable Planetarium Dome to STEM EXPOs, the Arlington County Fair, and other events and have exciting opportunities lined up for the future.
We are looking for volunteers to be trained to operate the portable dome (this includes setup, operation of shows and disassembly and pack up). Our goal is to create a "tiger team" of trained operators willing to volunteer to be operators a couple of times a year.
We will host regular trainings on the Dome - likely in the Arlington area. Training should take 2-3 hours. We will do these trainings a couple of times a year so if you can't make the a training but are interested there will be other opportunities as well. We will also do on-site training at events.
About the portable planetarium dome: This portable planetarium was originally acquired by Marymount University with support from the family of Professor Elizabeth Myhill (1960-2010) who taught astronomy, geology, and physics at Marymount University from 1993-2010. Professor Myhill was particularly focused on recognizing the contributions of women to the fields of physics and astronomy and she received the Draghi teaching award in 2007.
FOAP acquired the portable planetarium in Fall 2024 and will use it to further expand public access to and awareness of the wonders of science and the universe.
If you are interested in this opportunity please email dana@friendsoftheplanetarium.org. We hope to hear from you!
