McFarlane writes "This book is a journey into an idea that changes the world-the idea that a river is alive". The book takes us on journeys to the cloud forest of Ecuador, the creeks and lagoons of Chennai, India and the Mutehekau Shipu river basin of Canada.
Along the way McFarlane introduces us to many people who are passionate about protecting the lives of these rivers.
