The Trump administration is proposing to remove critical protections for habitats that endangered and threatened species depend on to survive. The rule change would radically alter the interpretation of the Endangered Species Act, denying the obvious need to prevent habitat destruction by removing the definition of “harm” as it has been applied for decades.
This shift would pave the way for increased logging, mining, and development in areas that are currently off-limits for the protection of vulnerable wildlife. The destruction of habitat is the main driver of species extinction.
The rule change challenges a long-standing interpretation that has been supported by the U.S. Supreme Court and used to conserve millions of acres. Undoing this precedent would unravel decades of progress in species protection.
