Description

Join Wild Virginia on a field trip led by Vernal Pool expert Michael Hayslett to visit the Lyndhurst Ponds on Saturday, April 5 from 9:00-12:30.

Register here! Field Trip to a Vernal Pool! Tickets, Sat, Apr 5, 2025 at 9:00 AM | Eventbrite

Lyndhurst Ponds Natural Area Preserve is managed by the Natural Heritage program of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation to protect several Shenandoah Valley Sinkhole ponds. These wetlands are a globally rare habitat that provide critical breeding habitat for many amphibians and support unique flora such as the federally endangered Virginia Sneezeweed and newly described Valley Doll's Daisy that have adapted to the fluctuating water levels of these ponds. This important area of biodiversity would have been lost had the Atlantic Coast Pipeline been built making its current protection and restoration even more special.

Before registering, please note that due to limited parking at the preserve we will meet at a nearby location and consolidate into as few cars as possible to drive to the ponds. Participants will be asked to bring high waterproof boots such as "Wellies" that we will decontaminate in order to prevent introducing pathogens or invasive species to this sensitive habitat. The walking involved will be short distances on flat but potentially uneven or muddy terrain. There are no restroom facilities at the preserve.
