Volunteer: Refugee Youth Mentor

Volunteers are paired with refugee youth (ages 16-24) to assist with career development and empowerment. Duties vary based on the goals and interests of the youth, but tend to focus on exploring career and educational opportunities, identifying career pathways, assisting with the job search and application process (resume, cover letter, application, interview), and setting short and long term goals. Volunteers are encouraged to meet youth outside of their homes at coffee shops or in public places.

Time commitment: 6-10 hours per month for 6 months, although this time commitment is very flexible. If you are interested in using your knowledge of your community to help newcomers, please respond! This opportunity may be virtually only, in person, or hybrid.

Volunteer: Volunteer Drivers Needed to Help Our Neighbors!

Our mission at Arlington Neighborhood Village (ANV) is to enable seniors to continue living in their own homes as they age—safely, independently, and with an enhanced quality of life. ANV’s trained and vetted volunteers provide direct services to our members to help them age in place, and to reduce isolation and foster a sense of connection with the community.

Right now, ANV has a pressing need for drivers—our members need transportation to medical appointments, physical therapy, the grocery store, and more. About 1/3 of our members use a mobility device (like a walker or cane), or have some vision or hearing loss. Ensuring that these members have a safe, convenient and supportive mode of transportation for appointments and errands is a top priority for ANV. So we need you!

The loss of freedom for seniors who can no longer drive is more than a hassle—it’s frustrating, sad, and isolating. ANV’s volunteer drivers give seniors the gift of a ride—and connection. Being a transportation volunteer is a wonderful opportunity to not only help an ANV member get where they need to go, but to make a connection, get to know someone new, and provide a friendly interaction to someone who could really use it.

ANV primarily needs drivers with availability weekdays during business hours. Drivers must be 21 and pass a background and driving record check. Training and support are provided.  Please go to ANV's website  to learn more.

Here's a testimonial from a long-time ANV driver:

"I come from a family that treasures helping others and as I am growing older and now retired, I was searching for a way to give back to my community. Someone I knew who was also involved with Arlington Neighborhood Village, suggested I become a volunteer driver. I also volunteer in the office. I find the structure of ANV very conducive to my schedule—I can pick and choose what I want to do and when I want to do it. I have made many new friends driving and the conversations are always interesting. Many social activities and special outings are offered by ANV and I have made many new friends in these events also. ANV gives me great satisfaction in knowing that I am helping others and keeping active in the wider community. It makes Arlington feel like a small town."

Volunteer: Board of Directors Vacancy - Starting January 2026

The Friends of Arlington's Planetarium Announce Vacancy on its All-Volunteer Board of Directors Beginning in January 2026

The Friends of Arlington's Planetarium (FOAP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting Arlington's David M. Brown Planetarium as an accessible community resource for all people to learn, engage, and be inspired by the wonders of science and the universe. As part of its mission, FOAP hosts a variety of monthly science-themed public shows at the planetarium. The group also raises funds to sponsor a college scholarship and grants for teachers seeking professional STEM development.

FOAP’s all-volunteer Board of Directors does much of the planning and guidance work of the organization. The Friends are seeking an interested individual to serve on its Board, elected in January to a two-year term.  Enthusiasm, a willingness to be actively involved in various projects and the availability of 15-20 volunteer hours per month are the primary requirements of the position. No special science knowledge is required; however, to further enhance the planetarium's broader audience, volunteers with a background in communications/publicity, volunteer program management or graphics design are a plus, as is any candidate who is bilingual in Spanish.

Interested candidates seeking information and an application can find details at the FOAP Elections web page.  The deadline for application submissions is Dec. 31, 2025.

Volunteer: Spanish Interpreters

Are you bilingual? You can use your language skills to assist with medical appointments in-person or via telehealth! To provide the best patient-centered care, AFC uses volunteer interpreters to assist with patient communication.

Arlington Free Clinic advances health equity by providing comprehensive, whole-person healthcare to our neighbors who would otherwise lack access. Volunteer Spanish Interpreters are needed to facilitate the communication between providers and patients. Encounters include intake, discharge, primary care, specialty care, physical therapy, diabetic education, exercise classes, and more!

What makes a successful volunteer?
Volunteer interpreters do not have to be professional interpreters, nor do they have to have experience in the medical field or existing strong familiarity with medical terminology. A successful AFC Volunteer Interpreter likes interacting with new people, enjoys fast paced working environments, has a flexible personality, and is culturally aware. AFC provides training for volunteer interpreters and all trainees shadow a medical session before working solo.

AFC is in need of licensed mental health volunteers to see patients remotely or in-person! We are currently seeking NPs, LPCs, LMFTs, or LCSWs licensed in Virginia. Spanish language ability is most welcome, but not required. Volunteers must commit to 1-2 shifts a month and appointments can be done via telehealth. Please email volunteer@arlingtonfreeclinic.org with a copy of your CV for more information.

Volunteer: Animal Fostering

Foster families expand AWLA’s ability to care for animals beyond the walls of the shelter by giving pets a warm, loving environment to heal, grow, and flourish.

Fostering provides a temporary home for a pet, as an alternative to housing them in the shelter.  Every foster request is unique because every animal is unique. Foster commitments range from two weeks to several months, so you can choose foster options that fit your lifestyle.

We may ask that animals be actively promoted for adoption from the foster home. The sooner your foster animal is adopted, the sooner you can (hopefully) bring a new foster pet into your home, giving us one more available kennel at the shelter to help other animals in need.

AWLA will provide the items you need to get started. This may include but is not limited to carriers, crates, food, medication, litter boxes, puppy pads, bowls, collar/leash, etc. Shelter supplies are donation-based, so if you would like to provide approved supplies for your foster animal we would be extremely grateful!

Foster RequirementsFoster caregivers must be 18 years of age or older.Willingness to abide by all policies and procedures in our foster manual and in the foster care contract you sign when you pick up your foster animal. You will receive a copy of the contract each time you foster. If you rent your home, you must have permission from the property manager/landlord to house animals.Have regular access to email and respond promptly to email and phone communication.Be able to provide or arrange a transportation plan for your foster animal(s) to and from AWLA.Follow instructions from AWLA staff regarding medical and behavioral needs  Have proof of up-to-date vaccinations for all resident animals.  Rabies vaccinations are required. (DA2PP, FVRCP, Bordetella, etc as appropriate)Understand that your foster animal is under the custody of AWLA.  Foster caregiver input is welcomed and will always be taken into consideration; however, AWLA staff members are the primary decision makers regarding the health and well-being of our animals.

Volunteer: Help Arlington Seniors Age-in-Place

Arlington Neighborhood Village (ANV) relies on volunteers to provide services to Arlington seniors to help them age-in-place. As we age, simple tasks that we once took for granted (getting boxes down from the attic, changing a lightbulb, running errands) become more difficult. ANV is part of a nationwide movement to provide support and services to seniors so that they can remain in their homes and community for as long as possible, safely and independently.

ANV services include providing transportation to medical appointments or the grocery store; helping with minor household tasks or how to use technology; being a walking buddy or friendly visitor; or running errands. Transportation volunteers are needed during weekday business hours; many other services can be provided on a more flexible schedule, including weekends. ANV and its volunteers also organize health and wellness programs and a variety of social gatherings like happy hours, Tai Chi, bocce, and "Coffee and Conversation" with guest speakers. You can also lend your expertise to help with marketing, fundraising, enhancing back office support, planning events and programs for members, and more. Please visit ANV's website to learn more about us and to apply to be a volunteer (you must be 18 or over; 21 to serve as a driver). All volunteers supporting members receive training and must pass a background check.

For insurance reasons, we are unable to approve applicants with non-cleared background checks, or those who are seeking court-involved community service hours.

Volunteer: Weekly Grocery Delivery for Seniors in Need

Arlington Neighborhood Village helps seniors in Arlington age in place safely, while remaining connected to the community.

We are looking for volunteers to help with weekly delivery of food from the Arlington Food Assistance Center to some of our ANV members. These are especially vulnerable seniors who have difficulty leaving their apartments safely to get their groceries. They need a helping hand getting fresh produce, meat, milk and eggs.

In addition to their headquarters on S. Nelson Street, AFAC has a few distribution sites for apartment residents and a Saturday morning-only site at Clarendon United Methodist Church. Some of our members need pickup from S. Nelson Street, others from satellite distribution sites. This is a recurring, weekly activity; of course, if you are not available on a particular week we can always find a substitute. To apply to be an ANV Volunteer, you'll complete our Volunteer Application Form, take a training over Zoom, and pass a background check. Volunteers must be 18 and over.
