Volunteer: Volunteer Drivers Needed to Help Our Neighbors!

Arlington Neighborhood Village's mission is to enable seniors to continue living in their own homes as they age—safely, independently, and with an enhanced quality of life. ANV’s trained and vetted volunteers provide direct services to our members to help them age in place, and to reduce isolation and foster a sense of connection with the community.

Right now, ANV has a pressing need for drivers—our members need transportation to medical appointments, physical therapy, the grocery store, and more. About 1/3 of our members use a mobility device (like a walker or cane), or have some vision or hearing loss. Ensuring that these members have a safe, convenient and supportive mode of transportation for appointments and errands is a top priority for ANV. So we need you!

The loss of freedom for seniors who can no longer drive is more than a hassle—it’s frustrating, sad, and isolating. ANV’s volunteer drivers give seniors the gift of a ride—and connection. Being a transportation volunteer is a wonderful opportunity to not only help an ANV member get where they need to go, but to make a connection, get to know someone new, and provide a friendly interaction to someone who could really use it.

ANV primarily needs drivers with availability weekdays during business hours. Drivers must be 21 and pass a background and driving record check. Online training and support are provided.  Please go to ANV's website  to learn more.

Here's a testimonial from a long-time ANV driver:

"I come from a family that treasures helping others and as I am growing older and now retired, I was searching for a way to give back to my community. Someone I knew who was also involved with Arlington Neighborhood Village, suggested I become a volunteer driver. I also volunteer in the office. I find the structure of ANV very conducive to my schedule—I can pick and choose what I want to do and when I want to do it. I have made many new friends driving and the conversations are always interesting. Many social activities and special outings are offered by ANV and I have made many new friends in these events also. ANV gives me great satisfaction in knowing that I am helping others and keeping active in the wider community. It makes Arlington feel like a small town."

Volunteer: Weekly Grocery Delivery for Seniors in Need

Arlington Neighborhood Village helps seniors in Arlington age in place safely, while remaining connected to the community.

We are looking for volunteers to help with weekly delivery of food from the Arlington Food Assistance Center to some of our ANV members. These are especially vulnerable seniors who have difficulty leaving their apartments safely to get their groceries. They need a helping hand getting fresh produce, meat, milk and eggs.

In addition to their headquarters on S. Nelson Street, AFAC has a few distribution sites for apartment residents and a Saturday morning-only site at Clarendon United Methodist Church. Some of our members need pickup from S. Nelson Street, others from satellite distribution sites. This is a recurring, weekly activity; of course, if you are not available on a particular week we can always find a substitute. To apply to be an ANV Volunteer, you'll complete our Volunteer Application Form, take a training over Zoom, and pass a background check. Volunteers must be 18 and over.

Volunteer: Help Arlington Seniors Age-in-Place

Arlington Neighborhood Village (ANV) relies on volunteers to provide services to Arlington seniors to help them age-in-place. As we age, simple tasks that we once took for granted (getting boxes down from the attic, changing a lightbulb, running errands) become more difficult. ANV is part of a nationwide movement to provide support and services to seniors so that they can remain in their homes and community for as long as possible, safely and independently.

ANV services include providing transportation to medical appointments or the grocery store; helping with minor household tasks or how to use technology; being a walking buddy or friendly visitor; or running errands. Transportation volunteers are needed during weekday business hours; many other services can be provided on a more flexible schedule, including weekends. ANV and its volunteers also organize health and wellness programs and a variety of social gatherings like happy hours, Tai Chi, bocce, and "Coffee and Conversation" with guest speakers. You can also lend your expertise to help with marketing, fundraising, enhancing back office support, planning events and programs for members, and more. Please visit ANV's website to learn more about us and to apply to be a volunteer (you must be 18 or over; 21 to serve as a driver). All volunteers supporting members receive training and must pass a background check.

For insurance reasons, we are unable to approve applicants with non-cleared background checks, or those who are seeking court-involved community service hours.

Volunteer: Connect Neighbors with Programs & Services for Older Adults

Do you want to make a tangible difference in the lives of your neighbors? Are you interested in being a part of a new effort to help older adults in Arlington access offerings that can enhance the aging experience? If so, Arlington’s new Community Ambassador Program is the perfect volunteer opportunity for you!

Arlington Neighborhood Village (ANV), in partnership with Arlington County, Marymount University, and area nonprofits, has created the Community Ambassador Program (CAP) to assist older adults in accessing services and programs to help with the challenges of aging. Arlington County has an extensive array of valuable information and support available to older adults through County programs, nonprofits, and senior-serving organizations. Unfortunately, many seniors don’t know about, or have difficulty accessing these resources. CAP identifies “Ambassadors” in neighborhoods, faith communities, senior centers, etc. and trains them to be knowledgeable about the many opportunities, support services, and programs available to older adults in Arlington.

Role of a Community Ambassador

Ambassadors will spread the word about programs and support services, opportunities for social and civic engagement, and educational and enrichment activities for older adults in their own neighborhoods. Ambassadors will act as a bridge between their neighborhoods and the Arlington safety net, providing information and soliciting feedback to improve offerings that help older adults remain safe, independent, engaged, and connected to their community.

Training and Support

ANV will provide thorough orientation and ongoing training for ambassadors. This will empower you to feel effective and supported in your role. You will learn:

Details about senior support programs and servicesHow to access services such as transportation assistance, medical support, help aging in place, food assistance, continuing education, and affordable housing

Impact and Community Connection

By becoming a Community Ambassador, you serve as a liaison between older adults and the extensive support network provided by Arlington County:

Spreading awareness about available programs and support servicesPromoting social and civic engagement opportunitiesSuggesting educational and enrichment activities for older adultsGathering feedback to improve and enhance service offerings

Contact cap@ANVarlington.org for more information and to sign up. Let’s work together to create a supportive and connected community for all ages!

Volunteer: Support the Arlington Chorale by joining our board of directors!

We are looking for people who want to be part of building the next chapter of increased impact, growth, and sustainability for The Arlington Chorale and its youth program, “Performers with Purpose.”

The Chorale hopes to add up to five new members to its Board of Directors (Board). The Chorale is also seeking a new Board Secretary.

Chorale Members, their family and friends, people from all parts of the Arlington community and the DMV, and supporters of the performing arts are encouraged to apply. We strongly encourage expressions of interest from people of color, individuals living with disabilities, people early in their careers, and LGBTQ+ persons. While the Chorale is growing in terms of resources and staff, the Board is a working board. We seek people who take a volunteer commitment seriously and are willing to donate their time and skills to support the Chorale. We welcome all applications and look for a good fit with the Core Values of The Arlington Chorale, including:

Commitment to musical excellence - The Arlington Chorale is an auditioned chorus. Inclusion - we want to create a safe space for our singers and audiences. The Chorale strives to be both affordable and accessible for all.Service - we expect chorus and board members to volunteer their time and talents to support the activities of the Chorale.Community - we are a source of artistic support for our members, and we thrive on a strong connection with each other. We see music as a vital way to reach out to and connect with our community.

We have a particular need for Board members with expertise in fundraising, grant writing, diversity/equity/inclusion, youth outreach, marketing/communications, legal, finance/accounting, and event management. But above all, we value your time, talent, and dedication.

What Board Members Do: Under the Chorale’s Bylaws, the Board of Directors is responsible for the Chorale’s overall leadership, management, and operation. The Board advises, governs, and financially supports the Chorale. The Board’s responsibilities include:

Developing, implementing, and overseeing policies and procedures; Adopting the annual budget and providing general financial management;  Establishing and participating in appropriate Committees to support the Chorale;Approving the selection, retention and compensation of the Artistic Director and other staff or contractors; Ensuring the Chorale fulfills all applicable legal requirements; Engaging with the community and local government on behalf of the Chorale; Promoting the Chorale to key constituencies, including businesses, community groups and individuals;Fundraising and conducting outreach to existing and new donors to support the Chorale; andWorking with Chorale staff, contractors, and Committee volunteers to promote the Chorale and further its mission.

What We Expect: Board members need to participate actively in Chorale activities and advance its mission. Their Board service should be one of their top three volunteer activities. They need to:

Prepare for, attend, and participate in Board, committee, and membership meetings and up to two special events per fiscal year (the Board typically meets six (6) times per year, exclusive of Committee meetings and the annual membership meeting);Promote and attend the Chorale’s concerts (if not a singing member); Communicate and advance the Chorale’s mission and programs to the community; Understand the Chorale’s finances, budget, financial resources, and legal requirements; follow the Chorale’s policies and procedures;Serve on Board Committees; and support the Chorale through their contributions of talent, time, and financial support. Because the Chorale currently has only part-time administrative independent contractors and no employees, the Board members, through its Committees, help market concerts, auditions, and special events, manage/support fundraising campaigns, including special event fundraisers; and provide logistical support for concerts, rehearsals, and special events. Additionally, Board members should contribute to the Chorale financially, at a level commensurate to their personal and life circumstances.

Who Can Serve: Chorale Members and residents of the DMV are eligible to serve on the Board. The (singing) Chorale Members elect the Board members at our Annual Meeting, held in June of each year, at the close of the concert season. Board members are elected to three-year terms, beginning on July 1 of that year and ending on June 30 of the third year after (e.g., the term of a Board member who started on July 1, 2025, would expire on June 30, 2028). Board members can serve up to two consecutive three-year terms.

What’s In It For You: Serving on the Board of the Chorale gives you real insight on what it takes to run a small but growing non-profit arts organization. You can exercise or further develop your management, administrative, policy, and advocacy skills. You get to know Chorale members and build relationships in the Arlington community. Above all, you will have the satisfaction of knowing you are helping move the Chorale forward and contributing to your community, building on the hard work of all those who came before you—many of whom still sing with the Chorale.

Please indicate interest by no later than May 1, 2026. The election will be held at the Annual Meeting of the Chorale to be held on June 1, 2025.

Volunteer: Create Welcome Bags for New Neighbors - Perfect for families or groups!

When families move into AHC's affordable housing communities, we like to give them Welcome Bags filled with essential household supplies to say "welcome home."

Volunteers will purchase all the items to fill the bags. A large, sturdy, reusable tote bag with a square or rectangle base is ideal. For purposes of hygiene and dignity, we ask that all items are new, unopened and unused. Please make sure items fit into the bags and limit your donations to the items listed below. We do not have the space or capacity to accept other items. Most volunteers find it useful and cost-effective to purchase items in bulk, as long as each final product has all the necessary items in it. Small 8 oz containers of all liquids are best, since the bags can get quite bulky. Thank you!

A complete bag includes:

Dish soap (1)

Hand soap (1)

Bleach (1)

All purpose cleaner (1)

Sponge (1)

Plunger (1)

Trash bags (1 box)

Gloves (1 pair)

Paper towels (1 roll)

Toilet paper (2-4 rolls)

Hand towel (1)

Plastic shower curtains and hooks (1 set)

Reusable tote bag (1)

Reusable laundry bag (1)

Dustpan & mini broom (optional)

Welcome home card (optional)

We are collecting welcome baskets for properties in Arlington and all across the DMV.

Reach out to Millie at millie.landis@ahcinc.org with any questions.

Volunteer: Flexible Volunteer Opportunities This Spring – Teach, Tutor, or Substitute with WEC

Hello! The Washington English Center (WEC), a DC-based nonprofit organization, is looking for volunteers to co-teach, substitute teach, or tutor ESOL to adult immigrants and refugees this Spring! WEC serves several hundred adult language learners each term from over 80 different countries.Check out this video featuring students from around the world sharing their thoughts about their teachers.

Join our community of over 400 volunteers to teach online and/or in person in downtown DC! As a WEC volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to engage with diverse cultures, attend free teacher training, and connect with others at in-person and online volunteer socials throughout the term. No prior teaching experience is required! You’ll be paired with a co-teacher and receive ongoing training and support from our staff.

ESOL group classes start April 13th and run through June 26th, 2026. Our one-on-one tutoring sessions happen on a rolling basis and have flexible start and end dates. Please note, if you are interested in co-teaching we ask that you sign up by March 27th to receive a placement or waitlist information on April 1st.

We also have the opportunity to substitute teach, which does not require a once a week 1-3 hour commitment, and provides volunteers with the flexibility to get involved at their own convenience. We are happy to work with your schedule and accept volunteers throughout the year! Volunteers must be 18 years of age and a fluent English speaker to participate. We also welcome non-native English speakers and encourage them to volunteer, in fact, we have many volunteers who are former or are current students teaching at lower levels. At WEC, we value the multilingual skills student-volunteers bring to our classrooms!

If interested in reading more about volunteer roles, descriptions, and responsibilities, please check out our volunteer flier or watch our short 7-minute WEC Informational video that provides an overview of all our programs. To sign up, please do so on our Spring 2026 Volunteer Form.

If interested in reading more about volunteer roles, descriptions, and responsibilities, please check out our volunteer flier or watch our short 7-minute WEC Informational video that provides an overview of all our programs. To sign up, please do so on our Spring 2026 Volunteer Form.

Volunteer: Portable Planetarium Dome Operators Needed (No Experience Necessary)

We have an exciting opportunity for volunteers. The Friends of Arlington's Planetarium (FOAP) has acquired a Portable Planetarium Dome. We have taken the Portable Planetarium Dome to STEM EXPOs, the Arlington County Fair, and other events in 2025 and have exciting opportunities lined up for 2026!

We are looking for volunteers to be trained to operate the portable dome (this includes setup, operation of shows and disassembly and pack up).  Our goal is to create a "tiger team" of trained operators willing to volunteer to be operators a couple of times a year.

We will host regular trainings on the Dome - likely in the Arlington area. Training should take 2-3 hours. We will do these trainings a couple of times a year so if you can't make the a training but are interested there will be other opportunities as well. We will also do on-site training at events.

About the portable planetarium dome: This portable planetarium was originally acquired by Marymount University with support from the family of Professor Elizabeth Myhill (1960-2010) who taught astronomy, geology, and physics at Marymount University from 1993-2010. Professor Myhill was particularly focused on recognizing the contributions of women to the fields of physics and astronomy and she received the Draghi teaching award in 2007.

FOAP acquired the portable planetarium in Fall 2024 and will use it to further expand public access to and awareness of the wonders of science and the universe.

If you are interested in this opportunity please email dana@friendsoftheplanetarium.org. We hope to hear from you!

Volunteer: Volunteer Negotiation Instructor

Through innovative negotiation and self-advocacy training, NEGOTIATION WORKS  empowers people emerging from difficult and often traumatic situations—such as incarceration, homelessness, addiction, and domestic violence—to better navigate their everyday challenges and to live the next chapters of their lives confidently and productively. Our volunteer instructors teach multi-week negotiation courses tailored for historically marginalized individuals. The curriculum addresses foundational negotiation strategies and dispute resolution skills, including identifying personal priorities, considering various perspectives and solutions, and taking initiative to achieve one’s goals. We connect these negotiation strategies to everyday scenarios familiar to participants, such as child custody issues, apartment security deposit returns, and family probate disputes. Each class session includes activities and interactive role-play simulations to engage the participants and let them practice new skills immediately.  We partner with the DC Jail and community-based providers who serve individuals currently incarcerated, returning to the community from prison, experiencing homelessness, living in domestic violence shelters, and dealing with other challenging life situations. We customize the curriculum for each group served, and most organizations engage with Negotiation Works for multiple courses throughout the year to support all of their clients as they cycle through their programs.

We are currently accepting applications for volunteer instructors for our 2026 courses.  All classes are taught by two co-instructors, take place on site at service provider locations in the community, meet once a week for 1-1.5 hours for an entire 4 to 8 week session, and are usually held during weekday, daytime hours.  As a negotiation instructor, you will have an opportunity to gain insight into the legal, economic, and societal barriers historically marginalized groups face, and you will help class participants navigate these barriers and build stronger, more stable lives.

Preferred qualifications of volunteer instructors include: (1) Prior teaching or training experience, involving adults or youth; (2) Familiarity with negotiation theory and practice; and (3) Interest in and experience working with historically marginalized communities. Fluency in Spanish is also a plus. Priority will be given to applicants who are available to teach on-site in the metropolitan DC area during workday hours.  Some evening teaching slots and/or opportunities in Baltimore or Laurel might be available.

Instructor training includes: (1) A comprehensive training manual; (2) Observation of two or more actual Negotiation Works classes; (3) A twelve-hour training program, held over multiple weekends. Training program includes instruction on the use of our engaging and interactive curriculum, overview of negotiation theories, guidance on best teaching strategies, discussion of trauma-informed programs, opportunity to practice teaching a lesson, and more; and (4) Ongoing mentoring.

Note: Instructors who teach at the DC Jail will need to complete an additional certification process, including 40 hours of training provided by the DC Department of Corrections.

Applications for the 2026 cohort will be considered on a rolling basis, with a February 13, 2026 deadline. The tentative training schedule is for new volunteer instructors to observe actual Negotiation Works classes throughout the spring, followed by in-person training in early summer.

Volunteer: Calling All CAT LOVERS!!!!

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is looking for volunteers who LOVE CATS to go to various Petsmart locations and care for our cats that live there while waiting to be adopted!  Our cats are currently housed in 3 locations:  Largo Petsmart (10464 Campus Way S, Largo, MD 20774), Oxon Hill Petsmart (6005 Oxon Hill Road Oxon Hill, MD 20745) and Rockville Petsmart (5154 Nicholson Ln, Kensington, MD 20895)

We are looking for volunteers to go once a week and help maintain the cleanliness of the cat's condos in the cat centers.  This includes scooping their litter box (or a full litter box change if needed), using the provided cleaners to sweep out and clean the condos to keep them sanitary, change out any dirty beds and toys with new fresh ones,  making sure that they have fresh water and clean bowls and general just tidying up.  It is really important that the cats are kept clean to prevent them getting sick. We also want volunteers to spend time playing with the cats and kittens so they get well socialized and handled routinely.  After your visit we ask for a visit report letting us know how the cat(s) are doing, any observations on their personality, and your interactions with them. Pictures/videos are great too!

The available hours are 9 am - 9 pm Mondays through Saturdays and 10 am - 7 pm on Sundays for Petsmart Locations. There isn't an hour requirement for this volunteer opportunity: we encourage people to sign up on a recurring basis ideally once a week.

Volunteer: Wright to Read Volunteer Tutor-Mentor

Wright to Read (WTR) is looking for caring, dedicated adults to become tutor-mentors in Alexandria! WTR has served the Alexandria community for over 45 years. We strive to continue to provide essential tutoring and mentoring services to Alexandria families at no cost to our families.

We are here to support children on their reading journey with books, resources, and a vibrant reading community while also facilitating mentoring relationships though elementary and beyond. We offer enrichment activities to help foster the connections between students, volunteers, and families across the program. Learn more about the program and what makes us unique here: https://www.campagnacenter.org/program/wright-to-read/

For one hour a week, you can work one-on-one with a student to help improve their literacy skills, inspire a love of reading, and help develop other important attributes that are key in their future success.

Wright to Read has two models through which we serve our students:

·         In our Flagship Model, tutoring typically occurs at the public library or another public location. The tutor-mentor works directly with the student’s family to schedule tutoring sessions after school or on the weekends, once a week for an hour, and sessions may change days or times as needed.

In our Site-Based Model, tutoring takes place 1 day/week from approximately 3:00-4:00pm in an elementary school library/classroom from September to May. This model includes on-site staff support, access to a variety of literacy curricula, and literacy games. Parents and guardians will be responsible for arranging transportation home for the student with the staff.

We ask that our volunteers work with our students for at least a year once assigned/matched (although many relationships last longer). If you think your circumstances (e.g., living in the Alexandria area, work or family responsibilities may prohibit you from continuing, etc.) may change in the next 1-2 years, contact us about other opportunities or programs that may be a better fit, such as acting as a substitute tutor-mentor.

This program requires volunteers to attend training (provided online) as well as undergo a background screening that may take up to 2-4 weeks to complete. Please reach out to us as soon as possible to receive an estimated timeframe on when you will be assigned to a student.
