Volunteers are needed to support Resident Services staff member run an afterschool program on Mondays starting on January 5th at one of our properties in the Columbia Forest neighborhood in Arlington, VA.

Assistants - No need for anyone to have any art skills, assist the teacher of the day (staff member) with the program, i.e. - pass out materials, help students with small tasks like gluing, cutting, etc. Help the teacher set up the room, pass out snacks, clean up, etc. The role includes setting up tables and chairs, sitting/standing indoors, working with kids.

Transform lives with Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia!

The impact of a Girls on the Run volunteer coach is as boundless as it is beautiful. Coaches work to support the Girls on the Run vision of a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. So lace up your sneakers and inspire a group of participants to be strong, confident, and healthy! Girls on the Run is a youth development program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade that creatively integrates running and physical movement. Teams of volunteer coaches are trained to facilitate our easy-to-follow curriculum with small groups of participants twice a week over the course of a ten week season. You don't need to be a runner or a competitive athlete to coach! Successful coaches only need to serve as role models for girls by showing up prepared and on time, by listening attentively, and by demonstrating a positive attitude! GOTR NOVA encourages applications from minorities, people with disabilities, individuals who are bilingual and all other qualified applicants.

Coaches are required to commit to 2-3 hours per week for the season, with a few additional hours required for Coach Training and the GOTR NOVA season ending 5K celebration. Practice schedules will vary based on team. GOTR’s Spring 2026 Season starts the week of March 2m 2026 and ends on May 18, 2026.

Project Knitwell is teaming up with the Arlington Free Clinic to offer a learn to knit workshop for their Survivorship Group. This is a great weekend opportunity and volunteers with Spanish language skills are encouraged to sign up! Interpreters from the clinic will also be on hand and we will have Spanish language resource materials as well.

Dr. Charles R. Drew Elementary’s Garden Committee is hosting monthly Garden Days!

Dr. Charles R. Drew Elementary’s Garden Committee is hosting monthly Garden Days! Staff, students, and community members are welcome to join. These events offer a wonderful opportunity to support the school by helping maintain five garden locations and fruit orchard. Come have fun watering the gardens and orchard, planting seeds, spreading mulch, turning compost, planting bulbs, and pulling weeds and plants.

Volunteers are needed to advocate for children in the Alexandria/Arlington juvenile court system. Volunteers advocate for children in abuse and neglect cases, custody cases, and cases where a child is in need of services. Volunteers conduct interviews with the children, families, and professionals involved in the case, monitor compliance with the Court orders, and attend Court hearings where they represent the best interest of the child. The time commitment is roughly 20 hours a month, and we ask volunteers to make a one-year commitment to the program.

Spanish-speaking, male and African American volunteers are especially needed!

Drivers using their own vehicles needed to pick up toy donations from Toys for Tots in Fredericksburg and deliver to AHC properties in Arlington VA.

The pick-ups will be scheduled on weekdays during the week of Dec 8.

TSS is seeking interested adults who would be willing to volunteer their time to tutor middle school and high students during the school day in math. 

Join us to support participants with special needs through rock climbing. Some of the areas we will need volunteers are for weekly practices belaying our climbers, climbing assist (climbing next to them to assist them with hand/foot positioning), photographer/videographer, social events, climbing events, logistics for fundraising, coordinating events, and we are always looking to expand our leadership team.

The Washington English Center is recruiting online and in-person volunteers to teach and tutor English!

About the Washington English Center:
Since 1993, Washington English Center (WEC), a community-based program, has offered English and literacy training to low-income adult immigrants in the greater Washington area.

What our volunteers do:
Volunteers meet once a week online or in person in downtown DC for 1-3 hours a week for 11 weeks. Volunteers follow a provided syllabus and textbook and are given ongoing training. No teaching experience is required!

We also have the opportunity to substitute teach, which does not require a once-a-week 1-3 hour commitment, and provides volunteers with the flexibility to get involved at their own convenience. We are happy to work with your schedule.

Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) is seeking enthusiastic, motivated volunteers to support elementary school students in 8 free Afterschool Programs across Arlington. Each center serves elementary schoolers Monday-Thursday and teens two evenings per week. Volunteers serve around one hour weekly. Volunteers get to read, tutor, play games with, and support students with academic and social-emotional activities. It is a ton of fun for students and volunteers alike!

We need to diversify our facilitation team for a men's group in our local detention centers. We are seeking Black, Indigenous, Latine/x/a/o, Asian, men of color for mentoring and facilitation in the Arlington and Alexandria areas. Requires a one-year commitment.

Responsibilities: Support academic, social-emotional, and character growth in students by providing reading buddies, homework help, engaging in games, team building activities, art projects, and off-site trips.

Additional notes: As most of our volunteer opportunities are with children, we require all volunteers to submit a volunteer application with references, complete a background check, participate in child safety training and program training. All these efforts are to keep our children safe. As a faith-based not-for-profit, we openly offer Christian education at our programs. It is not a requirement to subscribe to a certain faith to volunteer, but we do suggest only those comfortable with open Christian teaching to volunteer.

Assisting OAR's peer recovery specialists (PRS) in their work with individuals returning to the community. Tasks can include helping program participants with community resource navigation, helping to put together welcome bags for participants, ordering birth certificates for participants, helping participants fill out intake paperwork, cleaning welcome center, organizing inventory, resource research and investigation, tutoring, etc.

Potomac Conservancy is dedicated to protecting the lands and waters of the Potomac River and connecting communities to this vital resource. Our Community Conservation program fosters local stewardship, inspiring community-led efforts to improve the environment. We’re transitioning from a centralized, staff-led Volunteer Leadership Team to a community-driven model, where local hub partners will provide supplies to support cleanup initiatives. Wright to Read (WTR) is looking for caring, dedicated adults to become tutor-mentors in Alexandria! WTR has served the Alexandria community for over 45 years. We strive to continue to provide essential tutoring and mentoring services to Alexandria families at no cost to our families.

We are here to support children on their reading journey with books, resources, and a vibrant reading community while also facilitating mentoring relationships though elementary and beyond. We offer enrichment activities to help foster the connections between students, volunteers, and families across the program. For one hour a week, you can work one-on-one with a student to help improve their literacy skills, inspire a love of reading, and help develop other important attributes that are key in their future success.

Wright to Read has two models through which we serve our students:

·         In our Flagship Model, tutoring typically occurs at the public library or another public location. The tutor-mentor works directly with the student’s family to schedule tutoring sessions after school or on the weekends, once a week for an hour, and sessions may change days or times as needed.

We ask that our volunteers work with our students for at least a year once assigned/matched (although many relationships last longer). If you think your circumstances (e.g., living in the Alexandria area, work or family responsibilities may prohibit you from continuing, etc.) may change in the next 1-2 years, contact us about other opportunities or programs that may be a better fit, such as acting as a substitute tutor-mentor.

This program requires volunteers to attend training (provided online) as well as undergo a background screening that may take up to 2-4 weeks to complete. Please reach out to us as soon as possible to receive an estimated timeframe on when you will be assigned to a student.

The Oakridge Elementary School Walking Bus Initiative offers a rewarding volunteer opportunity for community members passionate about promoting a safe and active lifestyle for children. As a volunteer you will guide groups of students to school on foot, fostering a fun, healthy, and eco-friendly way to start the day. No prior experience is needed - comprehensive training is provided to ensure you are confident in your role, and background checks are conducted to maintain a safe environment for all. Volunteers are paired with refugee youth (ages 16-24) to assist with career development and empowerment. Duties vary based on the goals and interests of the youth, but tend to focus on exploring career and educational opportunities, identifying career pathways, assisting with the job search and application process (resume, cover letter, application, interview), and setting short and long term goals. The goal of the mentorship is to allow the youth to have a mentor that can help navigate US systems, promote civic engagement and leadership opportunities, and provide guidance with various questions and ideas as they begin thinking about future careers or higher education. Mentors play an integral role in showing mentees the vast array of opportunities that may be available to them in the US, as well as supporting and empowering them to explore these opportunities. Volunteers are encouraged to meet youth outside of their homes at coffee shops or in public places.

AFC provides training for volunteer interpreters and all trainees shadow a medical session before working solo.

Join us in creating a meaningful impact in our community!   As a Community Outreach Table Volunteer, you will be the friendly face and enthusiastic voice of Arlington Thrive, engaging with families at local events.  This is a wonderful opportunity to represent our mission, share valuable information, and build connections with attendees alongside Arlington Thrive staff.

Key Responsibilities:

●       Represent Arlington Thrive with professionalism, enthusiasm, and warmth.

●       Maintain the organization's booth or display area, ensuring it is inviting and well-organized.

●       Engage with event attendees to provide information about our mission, programs, and services.

●       Answer questions, distribute resource information, provide essentials items when appropriate, and collect contact     information as needed for follow up.

●         Provide feedback and insights to the organization after the event to improve future outreach efforts.

Skills:

●       Friendly and approachable demeanor.

●       Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

●       Passion for Thrive's mission and a desire to connect with the community.

Time Commitment:

●    Attend scheduled farmers markets or community events with a Thrive staff member. Dates and times will be provided in advance.  Shifts typically don't last longer than 2 hours.
