This is a staff-led program. Volunteers can expect:

Sometimes life can get busy, and you cannot dedicate as much time as you would like in making an impact. At Aspire, we have opportunities that allow you to support learning and wellness in our community by donating to Aspire’s food pantry!

Food pantry items support the holistic well-being of our students and families by reducing food insecurity and providing more accessibility to nutritious meals at home. This is especially needed during long weekends, holiday breaks, and times when students aren’t in school. In-demand items that we are currently accepting include:

-3 Event Assistants: Assist with event set up, engage residents attending and clean up post event. Set up may inlcude moving and arranging folded tables and rolling chairs, inflating balloons, decorating prize tables, and setting up the refreshment table. During the event assistance is needed with greeting residents and distributing coffee/donuts to residents. Assist residents throughout event as needed and hadn out gifts as needed. Support post event clean up including returning furniture and supplies to original location.

This is a program led by staff; volunteers can expect to be standing, talking with families, managing an activity and being able to explain directions. Working with staff, other volunteers and families is required.

-Activity Station 4:00-7:30 PM- Volunteers will manage various stations (pre-reading, number sense, pre-writing, snacks, books) helping children and families through pre-set activities and then handing out give aways.

-Teacher Expectations 4:05-7:35 PM- Any current or recently former Kindergarten, pre-school, or first grade teachers willing to come be at a table to talk to families about what to expect, what skills or activities they should do this summer, etc

-Bilingual Floater 3:55-7:25 PM- Assist with other stations as needed but also provide translation when needed by residents. Languages needed are Spanish, Ahmaric, or Mongolian.

Teen volunteers are needed to serve as Teen Buddies in our Reading Buddies program. Each Teen Buddy will be trained and paired with a child in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade who may struggle with reading. Reading Buddies encourages reluctant readers to find joy in reading and to have positive experiences at the library.

The teen volunteers who are selected to participate will spend 3 hours a week for 4 weeks, reading together with their Little Buddies and playing literacy-based games. Teen Buddies will also have ample support from a Youth Services Librarian who will train, be present and guide Teen Buddy volunteers during the sessions.

All volunteers selected to participate must attend the training session on Tuesday, June 30 from 3-4 p.m.

The program runs weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays 3-4:30 p.m. July 7-30, 2026.

Help Community of Hope get diapers to families in our Housing and Maternal and Child Health Programs!

We need drivers to pick up our diaper donations from the DC Diaper Bank in Silver Spring, MD, and deliver them to our Conway Health and Resource Center in Ward 8/Southwest DC.

This opportunity takes place on the second or third Thursday of each month, usually between 10am and 1pm . There is also time for sorting diapers after delivery.

This is perfect for volunteers with a flexible daytime schedule who have a valid driver's license and large car, minivan, SUV, etc.

Volunteers should also have the physical ability to pick up and move boxes or trash bags full of diaper packs.

Arlington Thrive is in need of some Spanish speaking volunteers to help families partake in our Wee Thrive baby pantry!

Our pantry is open Tuesdays from Noon - 2pm and Thursdays from 9am - 11am.

Join the Youth Action Institute as we celebrate our final event of the school year before transitioning to our summer programming! We’ll be closing down the EDCJCC parking lot for a large-scale service project in partnership with We Are Family, which supports senior citizens who are choosing to age in place across Washington, DC. Volunteers will pack groceries for clients.

This project is open to volunteers ages 11-18 and is eligible for 2.5 SSL hours.

Looking for an easy way to earn volunteer hours while helping out your library? We're inviting teen volunteers (ages 12-18) to help us keep the children's play area clean and welcoming! Volunteers will spend 1.5 hrs wiping down and sanitizing the toys and board books used by Courthouse library's youngest visitors. Any extra time will be spent straightening up books on shelves, and putting away toys.

This is a flexible drop-in opportunity, so there's no commitment to return every week. Sign up to help when it works for you. Support young readers and help keep our library a fun and safe place for families.

Assist library staff with the Teen Chill and Craft program at the Courthouse Library. Teen Chill and Craft is a monthly event where middle and high school students can unwind through a rotating selection of fun crafts and de-stressing activities.

Teen volunteers are expected to assist throughout the event, as well as with setup and clean up.  Participants will earn 1.5 volunteer hours.

Are you bilingual? You can use your language skills to assist with medical appointments in-person or via telehealth! Arlington Free Clinic advances health equity by providing comprehensive, whole-person healthcare to our neighbors who would otherwise lack access. Volunteer Spanish Interpreters are needed to facilitate the communication between providers and patients. Encounters include intake, discharge, primary care, specialty care, physical therapy, diabetic education, exercise classes, and more!

What makes a successful volunteer? Volunteer interpreters do not have to be professional interpreters, nor do they have to have experience in the medical field or existing strong familiarity with medical terminology. A successful AFC Volunteer Interpreter likes interacting with new people, enjoys fast paced working environments, has a flexible personality, and is culturally aware. AFC provides training for volunteer interpreters and all trainees shadow a medical session before working solo.

Arlington Free Clinic (AFC) advances health equity by providing comprehensive, whole-person healthcare to our neighbors who would otherwise lack access. AFC is seeking Registered Dieticians to support our patient population, and particularly our diabetes management program. Bilingual Spanish speakers are preferred, but it is not a requirement. We have a great team of volunteer interpreters to support communication assistance.

Volunteer providers commit to volunteer 1-2 shifts a month (each shift is 2-3 hours) and we require at least an 8-month commitment. Onsite appointments are also preferred, but telehealth opportunities are available. Volunteers are required to do phone interviews with several decision-making staff, must provide professional references, and pass a background check.

AFC advances health equity by providing comprehensive, whole-person healthcare to our neighbors who would otherwise lack access. This is done through the support of dedicated volunteer medical professionals. Volunteer pharmacists are integral to our mission. Shifts for pharmacy are Mondays (1-4pm) and Tuesdays-Fridays (10am-1pm, 1pm-4pm).

Depending on experience and background, pharmacists are also eligible to do diabetic education with patients. Shifts for diabetic education are Monday-Friday (1-3:30pm) and Tuesday-Thursday (5:30-8pm).

Pharmacists are expected to commit to at least 2 shifts (3 hours) a month. Those can be split up throughout the month or (n the pharmacy) back-to-back in a single day. Some volunteers opt to spend more time with us, and that's great too! Volunteers are required to do phone interviews with several decision-making staff, provide professional references, and must pass a background screening.

Pharmacists must be licensed to practice in Virginia. We register all licensed medical professionals with the Virginia Department of Risk Management which provides risk coverage for those working as volunteers in free clinics.

AFC advances health equity by providing comprehensive, whole-person healthcare to our neighbors who would otherwise lack access. This is done through the support of dedicated volunteer medical professionals. Volunteer physicians, both primary care and specialists are integral to our mission.

Optometry is a particularly high - providing screenings to our diabetic patients as well as general eye exams. Generally, available shifts are Monday-Friday (1pm-3:30pm) and Tuesday-Thursday (5:30pm-8:30pm).

Volunteer physicians commit to one shift a month (2-3 hours) for at least eight months. Some volunteers opt to spend more time with us, and that's great too! Volunteers are required to do phone interviews with several decision-making staff, provide professional references, and must pass a background screening.

Providers must be licensed to practice in Virginia. We register all licensed medical professionals with the Virginia Department of Risk Management which provides risk coverage for those working as volunteers in free clinics.

The Accounting Support Volunteer assists with the day-to-day accounting operations of the Free Clinic including financial recordkeeping, reconciliations, and reporting. This role is ideal for someone with foundational accounting experience who is comfortable working with accounting systems and wants to contribute their skills to support the clinic’s mission of providing accessible healthcare services.

This volunteer role will provide hands-on experience in non-profit accounting and financial operations, exposure to accounting ERP systems and reporting processes, and an opportunity to support healthcare access in the community. It is ideal for retired professionals or students looking for experience in accounting.

Calling all teens! AHC is seeking energetic, outgoing, responsible volunteers to help out at SUMMER CAMP 2026!

Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC), an affordable housing provider with holistic resident services, will be holding fun, enriching, educational summer camps for elementary school students. We rely on volunteers, who are mostly high school students, to sustain our programs. Volunteers will assist staff with outdoor activities, indoor educational lessons, snack time, field trips, pool days and more. Volunteers will be able to read, play, and build relationships with students, and can develop and lead activities. Volunteers must be age 14+.

Camps run Monday - Thursday, 9:30am - 4:30pm, for 6 weeks from July 6th - August 13th. 

A volunteer shift is ONE WEEK (Monday-Thursday). Volunteers may serve for 1-6 weeks throughout the summer. One week of volunteering completes almost 30 service hours!

Summer is right around the corner and May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting that skin cancer is the most common, yet highly preventable and treatable, form of cancer. One in five Americans develops skin cancer by age 70. 

In June of each year, Arlington Free Clinic hosts a skin cancer screening clinic for our patients and neighbors. A large portion of our patient population works in jobs that are primarily outside - putting them at significantly higher risk of skin cancer. In an effort to promote sun safety, we would like to give out sunscreen to the participants of this year's screening clinic.

Volunteers are welcome to create an collection drive on our behalf or just contribute an in-kind donation of products. This is a great project for families and high school students looking for community service hours!

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue has an adoption event on Sunday May 24th at the Silver Spring PetSmart.

Come spend the afternoon with a Lucky Dog! We need dog handlers to hold a dog's leash during our adoption event and talk up the dog to potential adopters during the event. We also need drivers to drive Lucky Dogs to and from our adoption event. Handler check-in is at 11:15 am (dog check in starts at 11:30 am). You should plan to stay until 3:30 pm.

A large, sturdy, reusable tote bag with a square or rectangle base is ideal. For purposes of hygiene and dignity, we ask that all items are new, unopened and unused. We understand the list below is long, and assembling welcome bags can get expensive. If cost is a barrier, you are welcome to choose some or most items on the list to include in your bags. Opportunity Title: Grocery Store Partnership – Volunteer Driver

Opportunity Description: Volunteer will be responsible in assisting the Ayuda Social Services Team in obtaining our grocery store products for the food pantry biweekly at the same designated grocery store within 30 minutes of the office. The volunteer will be responsible for picking up the designated donations from the grocery store and bringing them to the DC office where the food pantry is. They can also assist with inventory of all the products that were received and weighing each grocery bag for reporting data, although not required.

Shift description:

Opportunity Title: Interpretation Support (Senegalese Wolof to English and English to Senegalese Wolof)

Opportunity Description: We are looking for a fully bilingual English & Senegalese Wolof speaker with fluency in both languages to accompany one of our clients and attorneys to an upcoming ICE appointment in Baltimore, MD, where would support with in-person interpretation. The volunteer would be assisting one of our staff attorneys during their client’s ICE appointment to streamline communication during the meetings. Interpretation would be needed from both English to Senegalese Wolof and Senegalese Wolof to English. Volunteers are not required to be certified interpreters but should be completely comfortable interpreting between the two languages, and preferably having interpretation experience, whether through a formal position or volunteering.

Individuals assisting will need to join at the ICE office in Baltimore, Maryland for the single day appointment in mid-May. They will also need to review, sign, and return our Volunteer Personnel Manual, our Confidentiality Agreement, as well as authorizing and completing a background check with us.

Shelter Coverage/Hotline Volunteers donate at least 8 hours per month (two 4-hour shifts) in our Domestic Violence Safe House. They respond to hotline calls, ensure the smooth operation of the shelter, and assist in meeting the needs of domestic violence survivors and their children residing at the shelter. The shelter is about a ten minute walk from the orange/silver lines. Typical shifts are Saturdays and Sundays 10am-2pm & 2pm-6pm, with weekday daytime (2-6pm) and evening shifts (6-10pm) needed as well. Bilingual (English/Spanish) volunteers especially encouraged to apply!

Hospital Accompaniment Response Program (HARP) Volunteers respond to local hospitals to support survivors of sexual and domestic violence. HARP Volunteers provide emotional support before and after a specialized medical-forensic exam, as well as crisis intervention, advocacy, and referrals to Doorways other programs. We are seeking individuals who can provide calm and compassionate advocacy on Mondays - Fridays, 6am-6pm. Volunteer schedule is flexible with volunteers on-call for two 12-hour shifts each month. Volunteers must be available to report to INOVA Fairfax Hospital within 30-40 driving minutes of receiving the call (the hospital is not metro accessible). No previous experience in medical settings or working with survivors required. 

Volunteers must first complete 40 hours of training (conducted weekday evenings, in person and via Zoom 1-2x week) and submit background checks. We host training cohorts 3x year (Fall, Winter, Spring).

The Girls on the Run 5K is a unique, end-of-season event that brings together thousands of NOVA girls, their families, and community members for a celebratory 5K run. To be a success, each 5K event needs over 100 total volunteers in a variety of roles! Our 5K volunteers serve as greeters, buddy runners, cheer marshals, start and finish line managers, water stops managers, and much more. Volunteers are needed to fill positions at various times in the morning between 6:00am-10:00am. We have a job for everyone who wants to help! AHC gives out healthy groceries at no-cost to residents in our affordable housing communities. We are looking for two volunteers to commit to helping weekly but will take one-time volunteers as well. 

Volunteers will use their own vehicle (preferably a SUV, minivan or truck) to deliver groceries to 10 homebound residents in the Westover neighborhood. You'll pick up the bags of food at Fisher House on Washington Blvd.

Culpepper Garden is seeking event volunteers to assist with planning for our annual BBQ and Blooms Summer Bash. Guest will enjoy an evening of live music by the DC Starlight Orchestra, delicious barbecue, a raffle, and our Legacy of Grace Awards honoring valued partners. Proceeds from this event directly supports our mission to provide affordable housing, services and support older adults living on fixed and very low incomes. We are looking for volunteers to help with communications and marketing, social media, securing raffle donations, and working with vendors. No experience is necessary. This is a fun opportunity to make a difference in your community. 

When families move into AHC's affordable housing communities, we like to give them Welcome Bags filled with essential household supplies to say "welcome home." 

Volunteers will purchase all the items to fill the bags. A large, sturdy, reusable tote bag with a square or rectangle base is ideal. For purposes of hygiene and dignity, we ask that all items are new, unopened and unused. Please make sure items fit into the bags and limit your donations to the items listed below. We do not have the space or capacity to accept other items. Most volunteers find it useful and cost-effective to purchase items in bulk, as long as each final product has all the necessary items in it. Small 8 oz containers of all liquids are best, since the bags can get quite bulky. Thank you!

MoCA on the Move: Celebrating Spring Family Fun Series is every Sunday, starting April 12- June 14. You'll help set up, facilitate, and clean up the arts and crafts. Might include some light to heavy lifting. Fun and friendly vibes.

Optometry is a particularly high - providing screenings to our diabetic patients as well as general eye exams. Optometry Techs are scheduled in conjunction with the Volunteer Optometrists. Currently, those shifts are 2nd Wednesday of the month (4:30pm-7:30pm) and 2nd Thursday of the month (12:30-3:30pm). Volunteers Optometry Techs are expected to commit to at least one shifts a month (3 hours) for at least eight months. Some volunteers opt to spend more time with us, and that's great too!

Techs must be licensed to practice in Virginia. We register all licensed medical professionals with the Virginia Department of Risk Management which provides risk coverage for those working as volunteers in free clinics.

Volunteers are required to do phone interviews with several decision-making staff, provide professional references, and must pass a background screening.

Arlington Free Clinic (AFC) advances health equity by providing comprehensive, whole-person healthcare to our neighbors who would otherwise lack access. AFC is in need of licensed mental health volunteers to see patients remotely or in-person.

AFC strives to support physical & emotional well-being and has been providing mental health services in a primary care setting since 2001. Aware that mental health care delivered in a primary care setting is highly effective, we are currently seeking volunteer mental health professionals who can promote mental health, resilience, and overall well-being for our low income, uninsured population.

We are currently seeking NPs, LPCs, LMFTs, or LCSWs licensed in Virginia. Spanish language ability is most welcome, but not required. Volunteers must commit to 1-2 shifts a month and appointments can be done via telehealth.

This is a program led by staff; volunteers can expect:

-Set Up Assistance 3:30-4:30 PM (help staff by setting up tables, chairs, and other necessary equipment including cooking equipment and food options)

-Lead Cook 4:00-5:30 PM (Finalizing recipe choice with staff, cooking food options ahead of and while residents are arriving. Volunteer should be comfortable with food and brief moments in hot/cold temperatures.)

-Cooking Assistant 4:05-5:35 PM (assist cook serving food to residents who stop by sample station.)

-Break Down Assistance 5:00-6:00 PM (help clean up and organize areas used for the program, put up tables and chairs. May involve pushing/pulling/lifting up to 15 lbs, crouching, standing, walking around.)

Hello! The Washington English Center (WEC), a DC-based nonprofit organization, is looking for volunteers to co-teach, substitute teach, or tutor ESOL to adult immigrants and refugees this Spring! WEC serves several hundred adult language learners each term from over 80 different countries.Check out this video featuring students from around the world sharing their thoughts about their teachers.

Join our community of over 400 volunteers to teach online and/or in person in downtown DC! As a WEC volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to engage with diverse cultures, attend free teacher training, and connect with others at in-person and online volunteer socials throughout the term. No prior teaching experience is required! You’ll be paired with a co-teacher and receive ongoing training and support from our staff.

ESOL group classes start April 13th and run through June 26th, 2026. Our one-on-one tutoring sessions happen on a rolling basis and have flexible start and end dates. Please note, if you are interested in co-teaching we ask that you sign up by March 27th to receive a placement or waitlist information on April 1st.

We also have the opportunity to substitute teach, which does not require a once a week 1-3 hour commitment, and provides volunteers with the flexibility to get involved at their own convenience. We are happy to work with your schedule and accept volunteers throughout the year! Volunteers must be 18 years of age and a fluent English speaker to participate. We also welcome non-native English speakers and encourage them to volunteer, in fact, we have many volunteers who are former or are current students teaching at lower levels. At WEC, we value the multilingual skills student-volunteers bring to our classrooms!

The county board liaison serves as the local connection between Arlington FSS and one of Arlington County’s five board members. The liaison helps the organization stay informed about county transportation safety issues, fosters positive relationships with elected officials and staff, and supports advocacy efforts.

Treasurer: Seeking a candidate with strong financial background to perform the following essential functions: 

·      Oversee the finances of the Arlington Outdoor Education Association (AOEA) and advise the Board of Directors on financial matters.

·      Provide oversight of accounting activities performed by outside accounting firm, including bill payment, monthly reconciliations, and revenue tracking, and identify opportunities to strengthen accounting processes.

·      Oversee/serve as a centralized interface for AOEA’s finances (e.g., bank accounts, credit cards, payment systems, donations, Arlington Public Schools MOU), requiring familiarity and comfort with managing online accounts.

·      Provide regular reports to the AOEA Board of Directors about the association’s financial position, including reporting on expenses, revenue and status of investments.

·      Facilitate preparation of AOEA’s annual audit and 990 by outside accounting firm; and annual United Way application.

·      Serve as a member of the Executive Committee of the AOEA Board of Directors.

This position requires basic experience and familiarity with accounting and non-profit finances sufficient to perform the core functions of the position. Routine and recurring accounting functions are performed by an outside accounting firm. Expectations applicable to all Board members, including attending monthly Board meetings and directly supporting AOEA activities at the Outdoor Lab and in Arlington, apply equally to the Treasurer.

We have an exciting opportunity for volunteers. The Friends of Arlington's Planetarium (FOAP) has acquired a Portable Planetarium Dome. We have taken the Portable Planetarium Dome to STEM EXPOs, the Arlington County Fair, and other events in 2025 and have exciting opportunities lined up for 2026!

We are looking for volunteers to be trained to operate the portable dome (this includes setup, operation of shows and disassembly and pack up).  Our goal is to create a "tiger team" of trained operators willing to volunteer to be operators a couple of times a year.

We will host regular trainings on the Dome - likely in the Arlington area. Training should take 2-3 hours. We will do these trainings a couple of times a year so if you can't make the a training but are interested there will be other opportunities as well. We will also do on-site training at events.

About the portable planetarium dome: This portable planetarium was originally acquired by Marymount University with support from the family of Professor Elizabeth Myhill (1960-2010) who taught astronomy, geology, and physics at Marymount University from 1993-2010. Professor Myhill was particularly focused on recognizing the contributions of women to the fields of physics and astronomy and she received the Draghi teaching award in 2007.

FOAP acquired the portable planetarium in Fall 2024 and will use it to further expand public access to and awareness of the wonders of science and the universe.

Arlington Neighborhood Village's mission is to enable seniors to continue living in their own homes as they age—safely, independently, and with an enhanced quality of life. ANV’s trained and vetted volunteers provide direct services to our members to help them age in place, and to reduce isolation and foster a sense of connection with the community.

Right now, ANV has a pressing need for drivers—our members need transportation to medical appointments, physical therapy, the grocery store, and more. About 1/3 of our members use a mobility device (like a walker or cane), or have some vision or hearing loss. Ensuring that these members have a safe, convenient and supportive mode of transportation for appointments and errands is a top priority for ANV. So we need you!

The loss of freedom for seniors who can no longer drive is more than a hassle—it’s frustrating, sad, and isolating. ANV’s volunteer drivers give seniors the gift of a ride—and connection. Being a transportation volunteer is a wonderful opportunity to not only help an ANV member get where they need to go, but to make a connection, get to know someone new, and provide a friendly interaction to someone who could really use it.

ANV primarily needs drivers with availability weekdays during business hours. Drivers must be 21 and pass a background and driving record check. Online training and support are provided.  Please go to ANV's website  to learn more.

The Child and Youth Well-being Plan is seeking volunteer note takers who can support meeting dictation (note taking) during community listening sessions. Sessions last 30-60 minutes and take place in English, Spanish, Mongolian and Amharic (only need to speak one of the languages). Note takers can provide support live or from recording. 

Listening sessions will seek feedback from youth, parents and caregivers about aspects of Youth Well-being to include their experiences and hopes. 

We are recruiting volunteers to join the Child and Youth Well-being Network! We are seeking youth, parents/caretakers and youth programming service providers! 

Arlington County is embarking on a year-long effort to create a County-wide plan to address Children and Youth Well-Being. The Child and Youth Well-being Network will create the vision and roadmap for the community-wide plan, and will include writing a vision, mapping out an engagement strategy, and identify what's working (or not).

The Arlington Outdoor Education Association (AOEA), a volunteer-led non-profit that owns and supports the Arlington Outdoor Lab in partnership with Arlington Public Schools, seeks new applicants for the Board of Directors to be elected in April 2026. 

The Board meets monthly on Tuesday evenings, typically via Zoom, with several in-person work days at the Lab property in Fauquier County. Board members serve three-year terms beginning at our annual meeting, April 18.

We are particularly seeking candidates with strong experience and interest in the following roles:

Board Secretary: coordinates meeting agendas, minutes, and Board member communications; maintains website and calendar (using WordPress and Google Workplace), and reviews key association documents and correspondence. 

Fundraising Chair: works with executive committee and fundraising consultant to set and achieve annual fundraising targets; point person for event planning as we approach 60th anniversary in 2027.

Volunteer Coordinator: liaison with outside groups, e.g., Girl Scouts, Scouts USA and Master Naturalists and other environmental groups, to schedule volunteer work days and overnights.
