Volunteer: MLK Day: Smile Squad - Supporting Oral HealthcareSmile Squad will support AFC's mission to provide access to high-quality dental care and send patients home with tools to maintain their oral health. The AFC Smile Squad will do most of the project on their own time leading up to the day of service. They are tasked with collecting dental supplies (soft bristle toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, travel size mouthwash) and creating little gift bags to be given out to patients after their dental appointment. The Squad can create as many or as few as they would like. Prepared gift bags will be dropped off at Arlington Free Clinic on the Day of Service. The Smile Squad participants are also welcome to join our Community Tour (listed as a separate event on the Day of Service). Volunteer: Physicians (PCPs & Specialists)AFC advances health equity by providing comprehensive, whole-person healthcare to our neighbors who would otherwise lack access. This is done through the support of dedicated volunteer medical professionals. Volunteer physicians, both primary care and specialists are integral to our mission. Generally, available shifts are Monday-Thursday 1pm-3:30pm and Tuesday-Thursday 5:30pm-8:30pm. Almost all shifts are in-person/onsite, but some telehealth opportunities are still available depending on circumstances. Volunteer physicians commit to one shift a month (2-3 hours) for at least eight months. Some volunteers opt to spend more time with us, and that's great too! Volunteers are required to do phone interviews with several decision-making staff and must pass a reference/license check. Providers must be licensed to practice in Virginia and be in good standing in their affiliated hospital. We register all licensed medical professionals with the Virginia Department of Risk Management which provides risk coverage for those working as volunteers in free clinics.
