Every Neighbor United for Food

Who We Are

DC Food Rescue (formerly Food Rescue US - DC) is the flagship program of Every Neighbor United for Food (ENUF). We are proud to stand firmly at the intersection of food security, environmental sustainability and community.

Using a web-based app powered by Food Rescue US, we engage volunteers to transfer excess fresh food from local businesses to nearby community partners that feed people who are food insecure.  Since launching in 2016, we have provided over 12 million meals and kept over 15 million pounds of excess food out of landfills.

What We Do

Food rescue is a simple yet powerful action to connect the abundance of fresh, surplus food in our community with those who need it most. Using our user-friendly web-based app, DC Food Rescue volunteers can easily make a direct impact by preventing food waste.

How It Works:

  • Food Donors (local businesses, grocers, restaurants) notify DC Food Rescue that they have surplus food.
  • Community Partners communicate their needs, and DC Food Rescue matches with them fitting food donations.
  • Volunteers use the app to sign up for food rescues: picking up food from the Food Donor and immediately delivering it to the assigned Community Partner.

Volunteers self-schedule rescues that fit into their daily life, with most rescues taking about one hour from pick-up to drop-off. Whether you can help once a week or once a month, every rescue makes a difference.

Many of our volunteers “adopt” a weekly rescue, turning it into a rewarding routine. Others jump in whenever their schedule allows. You choose how and when to help.
